Shanling M3 1 & H1. 1 in the Test

The operation of the streaming player M3. 1 of Shanling is getting used to the part. But what sounds like the streamer in combination with the D/A converter H1. 1? We have tested.

Shanling had alerted last under his own name with boldly designed, tube equipped CD players on themselves. Then it became quieter to the brand on the German market. What does not mean that the Chinese developers and production workers have put on the lazy skin – as OEM work bench , the company serves many highly elitist High End Label, whose exact identity however remains under the seal of confidentiality. Even after the station wagon from streaming drive M3. 1 and D/A converter H1. 1 some competitors that are finger licking, but these components would be first time just as the originals, which proudly flaunts the Schanling-S.

Shanling H1 1: D/A converter

The ratio of price and purely mechanical equivalent is impressive on the two components ever: converter such as drive stuck in thick, clean cut aluminium profiles and loving detail solutions such as the perfect bearing backlash-free and accurate volume knob of the H1. 1 to Miss sometimes at drastically more expensive devices. Really bad that the about moving, encapsulated ALPS potentiometer only affects the headphone output , Line outputs – available in RCA and balanced XLR format – spend only fixed level.

Converter-side to give the Chinese with a Burr-Brown PCM1795 emphasizes modern, as the output stage OPA2134 of same manufacturer available – also not the worst choice. Input side of the AES/EBU input is missing, what not quite consistently, leaves only coax as the best possible connection to the drive – there on the M3. 1 the AES output is available. Computer use against it anyway via USB with the H1. 1 contact on which swallows in the low-jitter asynchronously operating up to 192 kHz/24-bit resolutions.

Shanling M3 1: Streaming player

The M3. 1 is based on the Stream700 module of the Austrian manufacturer stream unlimited that currently appears on all corners of the Hi-Fi world. Pro-Ject, Atoll, audio research, musical fidelity — almost everyone who own part of network programming is too cumbersome for the Viennese accesses. And so also not next to it, because the BridgeCo chips-based Stream-Board worked perfectly, understand HD files 192/24-Premier class, mesh transitioning songs reflects correctly without any interruption and supple and free of hakeln is devoted to in addition to network music servers of directly infected USB sticks and hard drives.

A request remains at the Shanling but as well as many other Stream700 players: one rummages via front panel display in larger collections, missing the opportunity to jump in long lists by letter key at the desired place. Who has a server with, for example, 2,000 albums out and looking about for the new Soundgarden, massaged the down arrow button in the remote control – for minutes and wonder why the Chinese have then provided the full SMS keyboard on the infrared sensor. Provisional answer for the Internet radio tuning, and it remains the hope of a software update that makes the keys for the server selection can be used – how’s drilled for example in the atoll ST200.

Hearing test

Sound noble Frenchman could not fool the colleagues from Shenzhen. In the basic character not dissimilar, namely vigorously, broadband, and with vitality advertising on, the combination of either before the atoll or the listening room regular Linn Sneaky DS showed the slightest respect. To take off properly from the integrated colleagues, the Streamer-converter-Kombi would need to bring only a little more calm and order in the sound – here the Linn despite significantly less spectacular appearance prevailed, and still. The rest came in the game, if a Mac player program decibel served as a data source. Also, if you M3. 1 and H1. 1 considered as two-part network player with additional digital inputs, the components are more than worth their price.
