Treadmill Or Bike? Choosing Aerobic Activity

Always run that doubt in the aerobic: Treadmill or bike? Which one loses more fat? Which is best for my knee? Can I do both?

Treadmill or bike, I chose these two activities because they are the most accessible, be it in the gym, condominium and even in the park, however instead of the treadmill running and instead of the exercise bike is a traditional bike.

Both are aerobic activities and we will have the benefits of aerobic you can read in this article (click here), however they have some differences that may be very important to you.

The differences between Bike and Treadmill

Although the differences seem obvious, transporthint will mention some features that can make differences:

Running machine

  • Like every good race, the treadmill has an impact, however technological it may be, with a shock absorber and etc, it will have an impact. The impact of a race, while not being extremely strong, is constant and your whole body will feel. If you do not have a good gait and lean mass to withstand this impact, you may have pain in the knee, hip, back and even the shoulder.
  • The speed is constant, different from the bike where to reach the speed X you have to pedal to it. On the treadmill you just have to push the button and run, this can be good in some moments, after all it forces you to run, but it can be dangerous if you slip or become unbalanced. It can also happen to turn a lock, like a fear of increasing more speed because you think it will not hold, so it is important to practice on the good old ground as well.
  • Running on the treadmill requires more coordination. Moving arms, raising the knee and contracting the abdomen,may seem easy, but many people go wrong, which can lead to injury. In the bike the movement is guided, the required coordination is much smaller.
  • On the treadmill you use more muscle groups, this means higher caloric intake, but what will make the difference in caloric burning is the intensity of exercise you can see in this article (click here).

Bike

  • In the exercise bike you sit all the time, although it has no impact, the spine can suffer also due to posture, pedal with the abdomen contracted. The hip can also suffer, improper or poorly maintained banks can press and bother two hip bones, called Ischia. The ergometer bike seat should be wide and always firm.
  • Pedaling is very easy, but ifdone in the wrong way will cause injuries. When pedaling, the knees should always be pointed forward, not close or open during movement. Also look at the height of the seat, when you extend your knee it should be slightly flexed.
  • The arms are free in the bike, this is a good advantage, in case you want to read, send a message, see your workout, but do not blur! Remember that to burn fat the intensity is the main and on the bike if you do not pedal it has not progressed.

Which one should I choose? Treadmill or bike?

To choose between them it is important to know your goal. If you’re looking to improve your race for the weekend races, then go treadmill. But if you lose weight is what you seek, I leave below some tips and steps that I use even with my students.

  • If you have never trained, start by bike. Your body will not suffer from being overweight, it will gain stamina and conditioning;
  • If you have a knee injury, such as chondromalacia, or in the spine, such as a herniated disc, do the bike when released by the doctor. The treadmill, due to the impact and difficulty of seeing the movement, can worsen the injuries;
  • If you have no injury do what most motivates you! Do not they both motivate? Do you find it monotonous? Do the two, divide the time between them, this is even good for burning more fat, as the stimulus keeps changing.
